In the space of a decade, Susan Reichey lost her parents, her dearest friends and her husband. The experience was devastating. However, it was also the inspiration for starting a business that both provides an income and furthers research to cure a devastating disease. By following the advice of her departed father, Susan has found a purpose for her life and a means to support it.
Susan Reichey departed from her professional career in the financial services industry in 1993 to become the primary care giver for her Mother and Father, later for their good friends, a couple that she referred to as Aunt and Uncle, who had no children. Shortly after their deaths, her beloved husband, Michael age 55, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Michaels’s death in August 2001, five months after the original diagnosis, left Susan without any relatives on her side of the family.
Susan nee Hartl adopted in 1955 at the age of two and one half years old as the daughter of Florance and Walter Hartl says “my parents blessed me with an incredible amount of love and instilled fine values, many of which, I recall almost on a daily basis. The one that enabled me to pursue a new endeavor following the loss of my dear husband was my fathers’ philosophy that any worthwhile business must have a purpose for its existence. “As you go thru life always keep foremost in mind that your blessing, large or small, should in someway, benefit those that are in need.” I suppose that this could be translated in a mere amid of ways but for me it has always meant that sharing ones blessings is a bigger reward than an over indulgence of personal entrapments.
While Susan was struggling with the grief following the loss of Michael she also was struggling with the fact that, she knew before she could heed her fathers advise in business, she would have to create a purpose for her existence. She proceeded to search deep within herself to determine how she could make a positive difference in the lives of others. Dismayed by the fact that her husband was a victim of the very same cancer that his Mother had fallen victim to some thirty years before Susan was inspired to make it her personal mission to increase pancreatic cancer research awareness and how better to do that than to start a retail web business. Thru her dedication section on the web site one cannot help but to be moved by her brave and courageous undertaking.
After an extensive review of many foundations that contribute to cancer research, Susan fell upon The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. This foundation epitomized the philosophy and spirit that she had been searching for and thereby selected it to be the future recipient of a portion of the profits from her retail web site.
