Company description::
Eastpointe, Michigan -- A national environmental initiative titled “Recycling for Charity” (RFC) has added Free Pre-Paid Shipping Labels online for their recycling program collecting used cell phones, pagers, PDA’s or digital cameras. The RFC program allows individuals to donate their old cell phone, pager, PDA or digital camera online to be recycled and have a donation made in their name to the charity of their choice. “It’s great that anyone can now donate their old wireless electronic device and not only have it benefit a charity- but now they don’t have to do a thing other than drop it in their mailbox,” states Dwight Zahringer, Program Manager of Recycling for Charity. Free Pre-Paid Shipping for donations is the first of its kind for any online recycling program offering. “No one company has offered such a great way to eliminate electronic waste, not even one of the major manufactures” states Sam Maktabi, Marketing Manager. “With new wireless phones and gadgets being introduced every few months these electronic devices have a use –life of 1-2 years before their outdated and end up in the drawer next to the socks,” adds Maktabi.

The RFC program harvests used pagers, cellular phones, Palm Pilots and digital cameras, with the objective of reducing hazardous electronic waste, returning salvageable units to reuse, and providing a monetary donation to designated charities for each unit collected. “We are very impressed by the number of donations that occur through our website. Before we added free online shipping labels people were paying $3, $4 even $8 dollars to ship one cell phone or pager. It proves to us that people really care about our environment,” states Sam Maktabi, Communications Director for the Recycling for Charity program.

The Recycling for Charity program is a member of the National Recycling Coalition and the Michigan Recycling Coalition. Cell phones and other electronic equipment contain many toxins that pose a serious threat to the environment and health of the citizenry if disposed of in landfills. Included toxins such as arsenic, antimony, beryllium, cadmium, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc can leach into groundwater and cause contamination. “Data collected have shown that by 2006 about 180 million cell phones, weighing 85,000 tons, will be retired each year in the U.S.,” according to Dwight Zahringer, Program Director of Recycling for Charity. “The necessity for collecting these items for redistribution or proper recycling is essential. And there is an upside in the fact that any organization or charity can use this program to meet fundraising goals.”
